Great stuff - I also love those "little moments" the great drummers give you in songs. A particular favourite is that gorgeous pick-up JB does after the breakdown in Whole Lotta Love before the riff comes crashing back in.
I'll contribute a great drum song from 2024 - Pearl Jam's "Waiting for Stevie." Matt Cameron drops a great drum fill early in the song, but when he repeats it later it absolutely crushes. He does justice to the rest of the song too.
I was listening to Oasis' Definitely Maybe yesterday and the algorithm kicked up "Hot for Teacher." I was in my classroom air drumming like crazy.
This makes me realize that I don't have an ear for rock drumming.
So, just to highlight some different styles of drumming I'll mention master Henry Gibson's congas on Curtis/Live! Check out his solo on "We People Who Are Darker Than Blue" -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hV6BzsgOLAw
That was a blast. Thanks for letting me stop by.

Couldn't agree more. If you pay attention, great drummers are often adding a lot of little touches that help add dimensions to the track.
That’s why I love listening to live music with headphones—you can pick out little bits here and there.
Saw Motörhead more than a few times in the mid-late 90s and Mikkey Dee was always great but especially Overkill with a massive drum solo
Sound wise, the snap on the snare in Tame by Pixies is perfect but then the whole record is a producers wet dream (but especially the drums)
On the other end of the spectrum, the drums on the first Bodycount album are truly horrible
Motörhead was great live. Pixies too. Great choices!
Love this, thanks! And as for The Rat - bloody hell, especially the live version. Unbelievable!
I’ve always loved Stewart Copeland’s drumming with the Police, and his hi-hat work in the last verse of “Message in a Bottle” stands out.
Great drummer! Very unique.
Great picks from both of you.

Nice one! Matt Cameron’s a great drummer.
Oasis to VH? Was that a rock brothers algorithm?!
Yeah, it seemed like a strange transition, but I was quite happy.
Killer drum song, for sure!
Former Yes head over here and Alan White’s drumming on “Sound Chaser” from Relayer is insane.

Also, I've written about my appreciation for Debra Dobkin's work with Richard Thompson: https://earnestnessisunderrated.substack.com/p/give-the-drummer-some
Nice! I'm definitely a rock guy, but did almost include Joe Morello's playing on "Take 5." Thanks for the recs.
